Where to begin this week? There’s the demise of the Biden campaign and the rise (though not without critique) of Kamala Harris; there’s Netanyahu’s speech to Congress; there’s the speculation about Harris’s shot at the presidency and the question of whether an open convention would have been better (we think so!). Don’t worry — with our insightful guest Cenk Uygur of TYT, we don’t miss a thing. Watch below:
The old Kamala is back. That’s Cenk’s pronouncement as he glosses Kamala’s shifting fortunes over the course of her political career. Initially favored as a rising star in the Democratic Party, Kamala looked like an early favorite for the nomination in the 2020 cycle, sweeping the first debate, before things seemed to go wrong suddenly and without clear cause. As Krystal points out, she’s a cautious kind of politician, and the moves she made for the presidency toward the end of her unsuccessful campaign seemed out of touch and lackluster. Now, she seems to be hitting many of the right notes again for a liberal audience exasperated by the uncharismatic and ineffectual Biden. But will it be enough for voters determined not to continue voting in supporters of Zionism and genocide? Will Kamala successfully differentiate herself from Biden’s tremendously unpopular and cruel unconditional backing of Israel?
Elsewhere in American politics, we were treated to a display of Congress’s unconscionable and full-throated support for Israel during Netanyahu’s address. Kyle considers it one of the darkest days in American history, and it’s really not hard to see why. Rashida Tlaib was a lone beacon of righteousness, calling out Netanyahu as a war criminal, while her colleagues applauded that war criminal and made it clear that the unpopularity of Israel’s genocide of Palestinians among their constituents won’t encourage them to do the right thing. Especially as many of these people jockey for positions in a potential Harris admin, it’s terrifying and necessary to see that currently, nothing holds these lawmakers accountable to those they represent and to the humanitarian consequences of their decisions.
We talk about all of this and more in Episode 184 of KKF! Join us tomorrow on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Pandora, and more for the podcast release of this episode.
