There are 80 million people worldwide who claim some Irish descent, with 3 million being Irish-born emigrants, their children and grandchildren. This group of 3 million are legally recognised Irish citizens and tend to share quite closely the sociocultural norms of Ireland. The majority of these people also left Ireland with great reluctance due to the hardships of various oppressions (imperial, fundamentalist, bureaucratic) and the spiritual and material poverty such pressures engendered in the Irish population. Most left to escape injustice, to find a fairer field over the sea; but except for the born adventurers, these Irish folk left with a sorrowful heart for farewelling the people, places and perspectives of their homeland. In a poetic twist very fitting for the Irish, there is a chance now that these long-lost sons and daughters of Éire may in a way come back over the seas to her aid in an hour of great need. Irish liberty, sovereignty and even ethno-cultural existence are being attacked by forces who have the nerve to claim to be doing it for virtue, justice and enlightened perspective. The Irish diaspora cannot vote in Irish elections (one must be a resident) but our kin across the seas can send in the cavalry with financial support for patriotic candidates and parties, with media campaigns raising awareness in their countries of the plight of the Irish people, and by sharing inspiration and information on social media and Irish radio, offering the clarity of their more distant eye to help Ireland see how the big picture looks zoomed out. It will be much more difficult for the Irish government to slander the diaspora as ‘far-right’ and demonise citizens of foreign countries, and this may encourage resident Irish to stand. If even a tenth of the Gaelic millions abroad decide Ireland is too beautiful to be betrayed again after all we’ve been through, and we put our foot down to declare that this time the Irish will see the end of tyranny and taste the sweet fruit of freedom’s victory . . . imagine! This will happen, if we let it. May the prodigal son return. Céad míle fáilte to the Diaspora!
