The obvious question about today’s story is: “Why should I read 13,000 words about four writers I’ve never even heard of?” To which I don’t have a ready rebuttal — maybe you’ve got a plane to catch? But my guess is that once you start reading, you’ll find it hard to stop. It’s a tale of two marriages blown apart by an affair, a group of four friends turned against one another. And because they are all writers, they are masters at attacking each other with words; some of the most devastating insults come disguised as praise. Along the way, there are reflections on the meaning of art and love and ambition that rise above the details of the four lives shown here. But not too far. |
