Whether actions speak for themselves is a well discussed topic for anarchists. In the case of Saturday’s assassination attempt, many questions remain. Fools, fearing silence, speak up to provide answers in the form of voter records, clothing, financial transactions, and browser history. More Positive Evidence is to come.
One thing is certain: a new popular enemy was born. Near universal condemnation of the act—familiar territory for anarchists throughout history—is the latest play for either political unity or rupture (depending on your news feed). And while assassination politics have grown more bizarre than the Russian nihilists could have ever imagined, the damned thing remains relevant for those violently opposed to the state.
My enemy’s newest enemy is not my friend, however. And anarchists are shit at picking sides, anyhow.
Do you have a new enemy or friend in all of this, or just another spectacle to consume until it fades away? Is this a watershed moment through which His-story is written (no doubt as a Facebook post, first)? If so, how are anarchists against it on our own terms? Do you think there’s anarchy to be found somewhere within electoral chaos, or does this latest buzz only add to the incoherent, deafening noise?
