One sign of a healthy subculture is the emergence of doughty new traditions like Millennial Woes’ Millenniyule (I will be appearing there again this year), Frodi Midjord’s Decameron Film Festival, and now . . . Jim Goad’s Karaoke Challenge.

From now until New Year’s Eve, Jim is offering his karaoke talents to help Counter-Currents get closer toward our fundraising goal. This year, our goal is $300,000. It has been an uphill struggle, but thanks to our generous supporters, we are now at $139,382, which is 46% of the way there, with one month to go. Currently, we have a matching grant in place with $1,817 to go. To put that in perspective, that’s 18.17 karaoke performances by Jim Goad. As Jim puts it:

For the absurdly low price of $100, I will debase myself by performing a song of your choice live and on camera. But let’s not go bonkers — if it’s a song that I don’t even know and/or a song I don’t think I can handle, I’ll ask you to pick another song.

My first intro to Jim’s karaoke chops was his takedown of the insufferable David Aurini, “Sneaky Like the Snake,” based on Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf.” Here’s Jim’s cover of “White Room”:

Jim’s first fundraiser karaoke of 2023 is Eddy Arnold’s “Cattle Call”:

He’s hoping someone will finance his desire to sing Frankie Laine’s “Rawhide.”

But why stop there? I’ve been thinking of songs that I would love to hear Jim cover:

  • John Lennon’s “Imagine”

  • Wings’ “Band on the Run”

  • Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” or “It Was a Very Good Year”

  • Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind”

  • Elvis’ “In the Ghetto” (Wait, he’s already done that one!)

  • David E. Williams’ “I Have Forgotten How to Love You”

Share your suggestions in the comments below.

Or better yet, email Jim at [email protected] to place your song request, and he’ll take it from there.

The easiest way to help out this year is with an e-check donation. All you need is your checkbook. If it is for a karaoke song, please include a note to that effect.

E-checks don’t work for donors outside the US, but there are other options to explore on our newly-redesigned Donate page.

Also, check out our Paywall page!

Thank you again for your loyal readership and support.
