Actually, this interpretation of the relationship between the U.S.A. and Russia has a precedent in the work of Carl Schmitt. In “Nomos of the Earth,” Schmitt, a Hobbesian conservative, analyzed the Cold War as a conflict between two ideologically-driven forces, American liberal-democratic-capitalism and Soviet Marxism. Schmitt actually considered the Americans to be more extreme than the Soviets, therefore making the latter less objectionable from a traditional conservative perspective. By William S.
